After missing the past two tournaments, El Tri Femenil has its sights set on a return.
It’s been more than a decade since the Mexico women’s national soccer team has competed on the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ stage, but ahead of an upcoming qualification opportunity in November, El Tri Femenil fans are hopeful their drought will soon come to an end.
A win over Haiti in the Concacaf W Championship quarterfinal on Nov. 28 would officially send Mexico back to the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2015, and secure its spot in Brazil for the summer of 2027.
Here’s what to know about Mexico’s path to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, how the team can qualify, the key players, and what happens next.
Qualification status: Not yet qualified
Next FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier: Mexico vs. Haiti
Date: Nov. 28
Time: 4:30 p.m. ET
What’s at stake: A win qualifies Mexico for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.
If Mexico wins its quarterfinal against Haiti on Nov. 28, the team qualifies for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, marking its first appearance in the tournament since 2015.
If Mexico loses to Haiti, it will move to a Dec. 2 Play-In. A win there would advance the team to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament, where it would have another opportunity to qualify.
Before the Concacaf W Championship, Mexico will play a pair of international friendlies against Jamaica on Oct. 9 in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Oct. 13 in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico. While those matches will not affect FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualification, they will provide Mexico with a final test against another team still fighting for a spot in next summer’s tournament.
While Mexico’s roster for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 has not been finalized, several players are already central to El Tri Femenil’s current World Cup path.

Charlyn Corral
Charlyn Corral is one of Mexico’s top scoring threats and stars at forward for C.F. Pachuca of Liga MX Femenil. She became the first Mexican woman to win a Pichichi Trophy, honoring Spain's top scorer, during her time with Levante UD Femenino. Corral was also a member of Mexico’s 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup squads.

Rebeca Bernal
Mexico’s captain and defensive anchor Rebeca Bernal is looking to make her long-awaited FIFA Women’s World Cup debut. The Manchester United star won a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games for Mexico, and earned recognition on the Best XI at the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup but has yet to compete on the FIFA Women’s World Cup stage.

Jacquie Ovalle
Forward Jacquie Ovalle of the Orlando Pride is another key piece of Mexico’s attack. The NWSL club acquired Ovalle in 2025 for a then-world record $1.5 million transfer fee after a standout career with Tigres UANL Femenil.
Redemption, plain and simple. Mexico is looking to return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after missing the last two tournaments, while a new generation takes shape under manager Pedro López.
Since taking over in 2022, López has given El Tri Femenil fans a reason for optimism. López previously managed Spain’s youth national teams, winning the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2022.
López hit the ground running with Mexico, coaching the team to a historic gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games, Mexico’s first time winning gold.
More recently, Mexico continued its momentum by topping its FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification group with a perfect 4-0-0 record to earn a spot in the upcoming 2026 Concacaf W Championship.

Mexico has never won a match at a FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament but carries recent momentum under López into its final qualification opportunities.

2027: Would be the team’s first Women’s World Cup under Pedro López
