It’s time for the Girls5eva Returnity world tour! First stop: Fort Worth, Texas, which is where we find our ladies at the start of Season 3. The comedy, which follows a one-hit wonder girl group aiming for a comeback two decades after their first taste of fame, hits Netflix on March 14.
But if that wait seems like 5ever, then you’ll want to watch the first eight minutes of the sitcom above.
Creator Meredith Scardino explains that this year, the women — Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Philipps), and Gloria (Paula Pell) — are hitting the road. But why start in Fort Worth?
“We ended Season 2 with Girls5eva deciding to bet on themselves and go on tour to promote their album Returnity, and they know that they have a little bit of heat for their song ‘Tap into Your Fort Worth,’ which they wrote because they realized it was the biggest city in America that didn’t have a hit song about it,” Scardino tells Tudum.
None of them are from Fort Worth, but if they can tap into the civic pride Fort Worthians have about their city then they’re starting with a built-in fan base. “It kind of works,” Scardino says. “They pile in a van and go to Fort Worth, and they’re experiencing love from fans for the first time [in a while], and it feels pretty good.”
They might not be in the lap of luxury, considering that they’re staying at the Marriott Divorced Dad Suitelets courtesy of Gloria’s credit card points — the vending machine is filled with wrapped kids’ birthday presents — but they’re doing great. They’re selling out shows!
Each woman is going through a personal adventure of her own. While Summer is enjoying living her life without hubby Kevin (Andrew Rannells), Gloria’s on a quest to hook up with each of the 178 types of woman as she crosses the country. Explains Pell, “Gloria is trying to just devour up all the potential that her life could be so she doesn’t lose that window of time. It’s like, ‘We’re hot right now. I’m believing in my dreams. I want to devour it now and get my life set up the way I always wanted it to be.’ ”
While her character Dawn is enjoying some peace and quiet away from her family, Bareilles enjoyed working with John Lutz, who returns as prankee turned driver Percy. “He really was the fifth 5eva,” says Bareilles. “I just think it’s so funny because he’s always saying something ridiculous. He’s the funniest, most pathetic character.”
Finally, Wickie is trying to catapult back into superstardom — while also bringing her ego back down to earth. “This is the time to get her backstory,” Goldsberry teases.
Watch the first eight minutes of Season 3 above, and tune in March 14 when all three seasons debut on Netflix.
