Bet: What to Know About the Series — and Its Second Season

Gambling is king in this teen drama about a prestigious academy and its newest, fiercest student.

Elite teens from all over the globe vie for enrollment at St. Dominic’s, an exclusive private school where underground gambling determines social hierarchy. So when an exceptionally talented gambler with a shadowy past breezes in to the storied academy, her betting prowess and need for revenge threaten to upend the school’s status quo. From creator Simon Barry, the live-action series Bet is based on the manga Kakegurui. The teen drama thriller, which stars Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, and Eve Edwards, was just renewed for its second season.

“When the Bet creative team set out to develop a series inspired by Kakegurui, we knew there was no point trying to reproduce the original, as it stands on its own and works perfectly,” Barry, the series’ director and showrunner, tells Netflix. “Instead, we chose to be directed by the spirit Kakegurui inhabits in tone, audaciousness, and fun. To that end, we made something ‘birthed’ from the source material that inspired a new take — one that pays homage to it and doesn’t try to replace it.”

What happens in Bet?

Mysterious teen wonder Yumeko (Martineau) is a pro gambler with a poker face that can’t be beat. An orphan since she was young, Yumeko learned everything she knows from her mother, who turned the young girl into a betting champ. Now Yumeko’s putting her skills to good use at St. Dominic’s, a prestigious private school where social status is more important than anything and everything. Yumeko will do whatever it takes to succeed, both in her high-stakes bets and in climbing the social hierarchy — no matter what the vicious student council at St. Dominic’s throws her way. With the help of her new friend Ryan (Solanke), Yumeko is also on a secret quest for revenge … and the overachiever will do everything in her power to get it.
