    Adam Sandler Cleans Up Nice

Adam Sandler is famous for his casual sense of style — but in Murder Mystery 2the king of T-shirts and shorts has to get a little more formal. Whether he’s attending his friend the Maharajah’s wedding festivities or cracking the case in the Eiffel Tower’s Le Jules Verne restaurant, Sandler’s Nick Spitz spends much of Murder Mystery 2 classing up the joint. And you know what? He cleans up nice.

In planning the costumes that Sandler and Jennifer Aniston wear at the Maharajah’s (Adeel Akhtar) wedding festivities, costume designer Debra McGuire had a simple intention: make sure the pair were visible in wide shots of the lavish proceedings. “We had an aerial view of what this wedding was gonna look like color-wise, and it was going to be very, very colorful,” McGuire says. “The only way we’re gonna see Adam and Jennifer is if they’re not in color, if they’re light.”

McGuire’s relationship with Aniston goes all the way back to her work as the costume designer on Friends. For Murder Mystery 2, McGuire commissioned a cream-colored lehenga covered with beadwork from iconic Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra. Sandler’s sherwani coat was designed to match his scene partner’s. Of course, Sandler’s comfort was the number one priority. “Most people know Adam doesn’t really like to get out of a T-shirt,” McGuire says. All he really needs is pockets that can fit his phone, wallet, keys. So, with the help of Los Angeles’ Dreams Collections, McGuire set out to make an outfit fit for the Sandman. “I wanted the pants to be really, really comfortable for him,” she says. “I was just trying to deal with the comfort level so Adam would be happy.”

But just because Sandler had to dress up once or twice doesn’t mean he abandoned his roots. “Even in the scenes where he’s really dressed up, it was important to me to add a little bit of that flair of something a little bit off, or not matching, or not exactly neatly tucked in,” director Jeremy Garelick tells us. “Or adding in the cool Air Jordan sneakers, so there was just an element of that.”

Nick and Audrey (Sandler and Aniston) arrive on the scene.

The Murder Mystery films follow Nick and Audrey’s transformation from everyday schmoes into globe-trotting detectives, and it was McGuire’s job to give Sandler’s image a similar makeover. “He loves to play basketball, he loves sports, he loves to be active. But he doesn’t love clothes,” she laughs. Still, Sandler’s rare foray into formal wear (outside his role as Opera Man) turned out okay. “He absolutely loved it. And he looked so handsome,” McGuire continues. “I think he even admitted how handsome he looked because I don’t think he’s used to seeing himself look quite like that.” In Murder Mystery 2, Sandler slays.
