Watch Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford Discuss The Diplomat Season 3

This article contains major character or plot details.

The Diplomat Season 3 introduces us to a new character we’ve been hearing about since Season 1: Todd Penn, President Grace Penn’s husband.

In the video above, Allison Janney (Grace) and Bradley Whitford (Todd), who have know each other for decades since working on seven seasons of The West Wing together, discuss reuniting onscreen. “It’s kind of funny for us to be marital,” says Whitford. “She said that kissing me is like kissing her brother.”

After being sworn in as commander in chief, Grace’s life becomes increasingly chaotic and crowded, and Todd feels left behind. “Something that I love about this show is that the political plot, all of this diplomacy, is always just amplified and resonating with what’s going on personally,” says Whitford.

Janney was also delighted to be working with Whitford again. “Having the character of Todd come on [means] you get to see … the private-facing Grace, not just the public-facing Grace, and that’s an interesting dynamic to see in their relationship. And it’s great that it’s Brad because we have such a relationship already, and we have years together.”
