How Did the ONE PIECE Creative Team Perfect Buggy the Clown’s Blue Hair?

If you’ve raced through ONE PIECE, chances are you’re as obsessed with Buggy the Clown as we are — and have some questions about how the crew created his look. We’ve got you covered.

In the first installment of Creating Character, the show’s heads of visual effects, hair and makeup, prosthetics, and production design share what it took to bring such a unique character to the screen.

“When I first came across Buggy the Clown, I was really impressed with what a character he is,” said ONE PIECE hair and makeup designer Amanda Ross-McDonald. “He’s got this striking blue hair, with this massive, big red nose … he’s quite a crazy character.”

From building full digi-doubles to spending more than two weeks dyeing hair to achieve the perfect Buggy blue, the creative team spared no effort in nailing the beloved character’s look. “In creating Buggy, it really was an ensemble of all departments,” said Victor Scalise, visual effects supervisor.

And it was all worth it. When actor Jeff Ward stepped onto set in full Buggy mode, his performance had the show’s extras on their feet, joining in a standing ovation.
