No long-term relationship is perfect. Sometimes you need a little (or a lot of) help to reignite the spark. Enter Karen Doherty, a licensed couples therapist with more than 20 years of experience. In the British docuseries Blue Therapy, the inquisitive therapist helps seven real couples who are looking for relationship intervention. The show was adapted for television from Andy Amadi’s viral 2021 YouTube show, Trend Centrl. Keep reading for more on the intimate reality series — and to watch a clip from the show.

What happens in Blue Therapy?

Over the course of eight episodes, seven couples — ranging from those still early on in their relationships to those who’ve already tied the knot — reveal their darkest secrets and biggest fears in a last-ditch effort to save their relationships. As she guides each pair through their troubles, Karen hears it all, from admissions of hidden debt to hostile relationships with in-laws. And while she may not be able to help them solve all their problems, Karen’s work sets the stage for each couple to express themselves safely and work on rebuilding trust.

“So many people want to feel understood and yet struggle to tell those closest to them what they really mean,” Karen told Radio Times about the series. “This [process] is not about quick fixes.” Throughout the series, she holds each couple to account, challenging them to identify difficult emotions, to express themselves without blaming their partners, and recognize repeated negative patterns. Which of these duos is ready to put in the hard work?
