What Any Given Saturday Reveals About the SEC’s 10 Most Dramatic Football Programs

From contenders like LSU and Florida to underdogs like Vandy and Arkansas, there’s a lot to unpack from the 2024 season.

    Aug. 5, 2025

The most dominant college football is undoubtedly played in the South. Since 2000, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has led the nation with 16 National Championships while producing nearly 200 NFL Draft first round selections. The football world — both collegiate and professional — truly begins with the SEC.

During the dog days of summer — while college football fans excitedly count down the Saturdays until the season kicks off — Netflix is filling the massive void with a behind-the-scenes look at the game’s top conference, featuring unprecedented access to the players, coaches, programs, and communities that drive the college football world forward, week after week and season after season.

The latest Netflix Sports series SEC Football: Any Given Saturday features 10 programs —from powerhouses like the LSU Tigers and the Florida Gators to constant underdogs like the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Vanderbilt Commodores (who have yet to make an appearance in a SEC Championship game) — during the highs and lows of the 2024 season, and there were plenty.

This is the SEC: If you don’t win a National Title, you’ve failed.”
—Andy Staples, college football journalist

From program-defining wins to last-second heartbreaks, from unexpected heroes to season-ending injuries, SEC Football: Any Given Saturday — kicking off exclusively on Netflix on Aug. 5 — will bring football fans throughout the country closer to the action than ever before.

Fans and foes alike will feel as if they were together — in the huddle and locker room, on the practice fields and team buses, front row at every press conference and pep rally — all season long, for the ride of their lives like only the SEC can produce.

Which SEC teams are in Netflix’s Any Given Saturday?

From legendary dynasties to hungry underdogs, SEC Football: Any Given Saturday follows 10 storied college football programs through the pressure cooker of the 2024 season:

  • Florida Gators
  • LSU Tigers
  • Tennessee Volunteers
  • South Carolina Gamecocks
  • Texas A&M Aggies
  • Arkansas Razorbacks
  • Auburn Tigers
  • Kentucky Wildcats
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs
  • Vanderbilt Commodores

Below, read a detailed breakdown of every school featured in SEC Football: Any Given Saturday Season 1 and the rivalries, expectations, and high-stakes drama that define them.

The Contenders

Shemar James, Graham Mertz, and Jeremy Crawshaw

Florida Gators

About

A program synonymous with winning and premiere quarterback play — Tim Tebow, anyone? — Florida enters 2024 with National Championship aspirations on the shoulders of veteran signal caller Graham Mertz. But with freshman sensation and the next great Gator quarterback DJ Lagway waiting in the wings, coach Billy Napier is challenged by Florida’s passionate fan base and outspoken media to determine who is best to get the Gators to the promised land. Will a potential quarterback controversy, season-ending injuries, and the grind of the SEC season get the best of Florida or will they rise to the level of championship-winning teams of the program’s storied past?

Greg Penn III, Whit Weeks, and Blake Baker

 LSU Tigers

About

A four-time National Champion and 12-time SEC winner, LSU is one of the most prolific programs in college football and a yearly producer of top NFL talent. Coach Brian Kelly looks to get the Tigers over the hump and back into National Championship form, but an inconsistent defense may be a wrench in his plan. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier leads the latest high-powered LSU offense, while a looming NFL Draft decision weighs heavy on the signal caller and Tigers fans everywhere. Can the Tigers put the pieces together on both sides of the ball to take the next step and bring another trophy home to Baton Rouge?

Josh Heupel

Tennessee Volunteers

About

The Vols haven’t won a National Championship since 1998, but Tennessee still remains one of the strongest teams in the country and the 2024 squad might be their best in decades. Coach Josh Heupel— a former All-American and National Championship-winning quarterback himself — leads the team in a challenging SEC and non-conference schedule, including a matchup against his alma mater, Oklahoma. Can the Vols make a run at their first College Football Playoff or will the stakes be too high? Heupel’s Vols may be the SEC’s best chance at glory in 2024.

The Up and Comers

LaNorris Sellers

South Carolina Gamecocks

About

Being the son of a coaching legend is challenging enough, but joining the family business to lead his own football program is a weekly roller coaster for South Carolina coach Shane Beamer and his young family. Can the Gamecocks — led by freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers — mature to stake their claim as a SEC power or will inexperience and inconsistency continue to plague them as they navigate the challenges of the nation’s top conference? The country will be watching as Beamer’s team rides the wave of the 2024 campaign with a season finale matchup against in-state rival Clemson, a matchup dating all the way back to 1896.

Taurean York

Texas A&M Aggies

About

Every season, Texas A&M puts together one of the most talented rosters in the country but has yet to make a championship run. First-year coach Mike Elko takes over the 2024 squad that has their sights on the SEC title, but craves stability at the quarterback position first and foremost. With some of the most passionate fans and traditions in the country, can the Aggies sustain a record start to the season with a looming showdown: facing off for the first time in 13 years  against renewed rival Texas? Everything is bigger in Texas, including the drama of the Aggies’ 2024 season.

The Underdogs

Joshua Braun

Arkansas Razorbacks

About

Known more for their basketball program than football, Arkansas kicked off the 2024 season with a new-look offense and a renewed focus on strength in the trenches — the offensive line. It’s not the most glamorous of position groups on the team, but coach Sam Pittman puts an emphasis on hard-nosed and blue collar play, especially to protect new quarterback Taylen Green. Can the Razorbacks rise to the occasion and stay true to form while battling a brutal SEC schedule?

Keyron Crawford

Auburn Tigers

About

Auburn has been a consistent SEC power, but hasn’t won a conference title since 2013. Second-year head coach Hugh Freeze looks to continue his rebuild with quarterback Payton Thorne shouldering the load. Can a revamped offense and youth movement of top recruits bring the Tigers back to their winning ways? The grind of the SEC may have other ideas for Auburn, but one thing is for sure: There will be no boring weeks.

Kentucky Wildcats

About

A legendary basketball school, Kentucky is not a football power by any means. But don’t tell that to Detroit duo Maxwell Hairston and Deone Walker, who ventured South to compete against the best players in the country and prepare for the NFL. Will another challenging season for the Wildcats, coached by Mark Stoops since 2013, derail the speedy cornerback and massive defensive tackle’s pro aspirations, or will they persevere and rise to the top of the premiere conference in college football?

Mississippi State

About

A former SEC power that has struggled in recent years, Mississippi State kicked off 2024 with a first-time head coach in Jeff Lebby and zero returning starters on offense. The expectations were admittedly low in Starkville, but that set the stage for a boom or bust season for the Bulldogs. Regardless of the team’s record, a matchup against archrival Ole Miss at season’s end is the true litmus test for the team, with the famed Egg Bowl’s Golden Egg trophy at stake. In-state bragging rights is worth its weight in gold for the Bulldogs in 2024.

Alan Wright

Vanderbilt Commodores

About

The perennial doormat of the SEC, Vanderbilt’s new quarterback — the overlooked, undersized, and outspoken transfer Diego Pavia — aims to change the Commodores’ trajectory during his first season in Nashville. While jokes about Vandy’s lackluster history circulate, coach Clark Lea — a former Vanderbilt player himself — and the Commodores use it to fuel their collective fires. A home matchup against top-ranked Alabama could prove disastrous for Vanderbilt’s momentum, or it could be the spark they need to change the course of their program’s history.
